Mother of pearl is the innermost layer of the shell of pearl making mollusks! This layer's scientific name is nacre. Mother of pearl can be found all over the world, in both salt and fresh water, and has been used throughout history for its beauty! In the 1880’s a group of London’s street traders called the Costermongers, began to decorate their hand-me-down suits with hundreds of mother of pearl buttons. These people came to be known as the Pearly Kings and Pearly Queens. Their philosophy was to give to others and even now, this community continues their charity work while wearing their pearly suits!
